Teach us to Pray

Grace : My Lord Jesus I beg for the grace to be able to encounter you in my prayer.

Scriptural Reading : Matthew 6: 6-15

When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in
secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. In praying, do not
babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many
words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your
kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily
bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and do not subject us
to the final test, but deliver us from the evil one.

If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your
transgressions.

Points for Reflection:

1. The father of a Jesuit priest from New York would always attend the Mass presided over by his son. He would always be seen sitting and intently listening to his son proclaim, preach and pray. One day the son shared this to his Spiritual Director. The Spiritual Director told the priest to go home, visit his dad and listen to him share his story. That is to listen to his dad in the very way his dad had been listening to him as he said Mass. I think the most valuable thing we can give to our love one is the gift of listening.

2. Recall the moments you had a heart-to-heart conversation with your Dad and/or Mom. What happened? What did you talk about?

3. Are there concerns, things that you want to say to your parents that you have not yet said to them? If there are any, what are those concerns, things?

4. Pray for your Dad and for your Mom. What would you want the Lord to do with them? Talk to your God about them.

5. End by praying the Our Father.
